Late Sessions

Late Sessions grew from a need to recover a more immediate relationship with the piano. Each session begins without a finished score or a structure to fulfil. Simple patterns, brief melodies, repetitions and silences emerge through playing, and the composition takes shape in the performance itself.

The night is part of these working conditions. Solitude and tiredness loosen the urge to control and make it easier to attend to what is happening at the instrument. The music follows the mood of each session, with its pauses, irregularities and spontaneous decisions.

The first outcome is Late Sessions vol. 1: three piano pieces performed by Héctor Muñoz, preserving the takes without edits to the performances. Accepting these recordings is part of the work. Each piece retains the small gestures that emerged in the playing and the continuity of that encounter with the piano.

This volume captures the first stage of a process developed through Late Sessions Project. Its eight minutes of music document an approach to the instrument rooted in simplicity and listening.
