The work
12 preludios para 12 poemas de Alonso Quesada begins with an emotional reading of the Gran Canarian writer’s poetry. Each piece takes its starting point from the tension, atmosphere and impression a poem leaves after reading. From there, Héctor Muñoz creates a musical response that stands on its own.
The cycle moves through contrasting expressive states. Language, rhythm and density change with each text; continuity comes from a shared way of listening to words and bringing their emotional weight to the piano. Each of the twelve pieces retains its own character within that shared journey.
The work was commissioned by the Government of the Canary Islands for Letras Canarias 2025, dedicated to Alonso Quesada on the centenary of his death. The project brings together composition, recording and concert performance as ways of approaching his poetry.
Juan Francisco Parra performs the cycle on piano. The presentation and premiere took place on 14 November 2025 at Teatro Guiniguada in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, combining a complete performance of the preludes with a conversation between the composer and writer and editor Victoriano Santana Sanjurjo.
